**Name:** Ulpiano Malachias

**Belt Rank:** Black Belt

**Date of Birth:** July 28, 1979 (age 47)

## Bio

Ulpiano Malachias, a Gracie Barra black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr., made his mark by winning the Asian Open as a freshly promoted black belt in 2006, a promotion sprung on him by his master and Marcio Feitosa just a week before the competition. Starting in Judo at age six in Belo Horizonte, he was hooked on Jiu-Jitsu by his friend Erik Wanderlei, who graduated him through blue and purple before Malachias trained under Alliance’s Bruno de Paula for his brown belt. A stint teaching in Helsinki and years sparring with Royce Gracie—even accompanying him to Japan—sharpened his game before he settled in the US, opening Gracie Barra Santa Ana with Draculino Magalhaes’ support and later a Westchase academy.
