Zach Kaina came up through the O2 system in Hawaii under Mike and Chris Onzuka before relocating to Costa Mesa at age ten to join the Art Of Jiu-Jitsu Academy. He entered AOJ as an orange belt and developed under Guilherme Mendes in the Believe & Achieve program, eventually receiving his black belt from Mendes in December 2023. Kaina’s trajectory from Hawaiian youth competitor to AOJ black belt mirrors the pipeline that has produced some of the sport’s most technically precise guard passers and top-position players.
