HE'S BACK: MICA GALVÃO TEACHES HOW TO KEEP THE BACK IN BJJ

From Athlas Training Team

July 5, 2026

Back control retention in BJJ taught by one of the most dominant grapplers on the planet. Mica Galvão — born in Manaus, Amazonas, promoted to black belt at 17 under his father Melqui Galvão, and the second athlete in the history of the sport to complete the Super Grand Slam in a single year — stopped by Athlas Training Team in Fort Lauderdale to share the details behind one of the positions that defines his game. This is not a list of tips. It is one universal rule that eliminates hesitation from your back retention entirely.

The technique addresses the most common moment where practitioners lose the back: when the opponent begins to escape and the top player freezes trying to decide which side to react to. Mica's answer is a decision-zero system built around the seat belt grip — always pass the leg over to the other side, regardless of which direction the opponent falls. Whether the arm is trapped or free, the mechanics stay the same: leg over, elbow and toes into the mat, knee behind the shoulder as a pillow, chest pressure onto the shoulder to prevent the turn, and bring them all the way to the other side. The back is kept. No thinking required.

Watch the full breakdown with both sides demonstrated from back view so you can track every detail of the foot position, the base, and the transition. If you have ever felt the back slip away in the middle of a scramble, this is the video that fixes it. Subscribe to Athlas Training Team for more world-class instruction from elite athletes visiting Fort Lauderdale, and leave a comment telling us which position you struggle most to retain on the mat.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
