## Bio

The first coach in jiu-jitsu history to have two athletes—Diogo Reis and his own son Micael Galvão—win the IBJJF Grand Slam in both their weight classes and the absolute in the same year (2019), Melqui Galvão built his career from a unique intersection of law enforcement and grassroots coaching. Born in Manaus in 1979, he trained kung fu from age six, then judo, karate, and boxing before discovering BJJ through the UFC in his late teens. His colored belts came under Fábio Aníbal, Matheus Segadilha, and Ronnie Melo, who promoted him to black belt in 2014. A police chief investigator, he began coaching in 2011 at a non-profit social project, later using jiu-jitsu for PTSD therapy with fellow officers. He also earned a black belt in luta livre esportiva under Antônio Aleixo in 2013, and opened his own academy in 2018.
