How Did Professor Alberto Develop His Half Guard Game? | Ask a Black Belt | Daruma Dojo Bay Area BJJ

A strong Jiu-Jitsu game isn’t developed overnight. It’s built through years of exposure, repetition and refinement.

Professor Alberto’s half guard began as a white belt after attending a seminar with Roberto “Gordo” Correa, one of the practitioners most closely associated with the development of half guard as an offensive system in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Later, as a blue belt, another seminar introduced him to deep half guard and gave him another layer to continue exploring.

Those early influences became positions he kept returning to.

Twenty-three years later, half guard remains an important part of his game.

There isn’t a secret technique behind that development. There are thousands of rounds spent understanding the position, encountering different reactions and continuing to refine solutions against increasingly experienced training partners.

Find positions that resonate with you. Study them deeply. Then give yourself enough years on the mat to make them your own.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
