THE BLUE BELT BLUES - ASK A BLACK BELT - DARUMA DOJO ft PROFESSOR ALBERTO - BJJ

From Daruma Dojo

September 29, 2026

The “blue belt blues” gets talked about a lot in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Professor Alberto’s take? It might be a myth.

But the feeling behind it is real.

Earning your blue belt is a major accomplishment. You’ve developed a level of proficiency, you understand the positions and you’re no longer experiencing the rapid discovery that comes with being a brand-new white belt.

That’s also where the next stage of development begins.

The answer isn’t necessarily finding more techniques or completely changing your game. It’s continuing to show up, sharpening what you already know and accepting that improvement becomes more demanding as your level increases.

There will be periods when progress feels obvious and others when it feels like nothing is changing.

Keep training through both.

How do you beat the blue belt blues? Keep training.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
