The lesson I learned after watching Rickson and Royler rolling

From Mastery Jiu-Jitsu

Two Jiu-Jitsu legends, a lifetime on the mats, and still rolling together. Watching Rickson and Royler Gracie spar reminded me what Jiu-Jitsu is really about.

In this video I share my reaction to Rickson and Royler Gracie training together. These brothers have spent their whole lives dedicated to the art, and they’ve stood in each other’s corners in Japan during some of the biggest moments in Gracie history.

What stood out most to me wasn’t the technique. It was the spirit. Rickson is living with Parkinson’s disease, and his strength and athleticism aren’t what they used to be. Royler takes it easy on him, keeps it playful, and at one point even helps Rickson adjust a choke so he can choke him better!

That’s the lesson for all of us: Jiu-Jitsu is meant to be enjoyed. Take care of your training partners, leave your ego at the door, and keep coming back to the mat for years, not just months. Their passion for the art is an inspiration for the next generation of practitioners.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
