Roye and Miguel discuss the benefits of Jiu Jitsu and mental health. While it is not therapy, in many ways it can be therapeutic. Jiu Jitsu is great way to clear the mind and focus on the direct task at hand. While fighting out of terrible positions we can learn to overcome uncomfortable positions on and off the mat. There is also a tremendous amount of comfort in finding a group of people that share the same form of stress relief as you, and often times similar personality traits. It's important to know that we are not alone in this world and there is always someone who understands us, sometimes right there on the mats with us.
On this episode of The Chewjitsu Podcast, we recap the 2021 No-Gi Worlds, discuss some competition takeaways, Chewy's experience competing on a gas tank that was a quarter full, and do a live Q&A.
Q&A Includes: What to do when getting fatigued holding closed guard, how to get competition intensity into regular rolls, how to stop thinking about BJJ before bed, how to get in shape as a white belt, how to get better at takedowns, if its normal to feel invisible to the coach, how important is the vibe at a gym, when to let go of a choke, when is the right time for your first competition, how to tell someone in the gym they stink, and more.

- The Origin story of a competitive athlete- How she plunged head first into BJJ- Strength and Conditioning, injuries and winning World Championships- The challenging path to ADCC selection and the Big Show.- Pregnancy, rolling, lifting and child birth
In this candid chat Liv gives a no BS account of her athletic career and what it takes to push the limits on the long road to the top of the BJJ Podium.
I hope you like this. One of my favorite setups now from the closed guard when your opponent is posturing or trying to work the pass/escape.
you have to push both arms on the side and trap the closes wrist, forearm under your armpit and keep it stuck, there. takes a bit of practice.
Then get the sweep from there if it doesn't work, using the leverage to get on top and finish with the amazing Scorpion Death Lock! (@jaimevilleneuve 😉).
.
I really like this one and fun to apply
Try it and tell me what you think!

To Gi or not to Gi, that is the question. Unless you've been living under a rock you cannot deny the explosion of the no-gi jiu jitsu scene. However, has this now rendered gi jiu jitsu a thing of the past? As a young "up and comer" Kieren gives his thoughts on the age-old debate while ancient Adam reminisces about his early days of BJJ before no-gi became the powerhouse it is today. Malachy Friedman joins the show to talk about his start in BJJ in a more MMA driven era. He also talks about what pushed him to become a coach, why he feels the gi helps your BJJ overall and the power of the Flower Sweep for off-balancing and attacking!

The Woman, the myth, the legend! Jess Fraser is a pioneer in the Australian Jiu-jitsu scene. If you do not know this name, settle in for a amazing tale of perseverance, toughness and competitive fire. From early starts in Krav Maga and Yoga instructing she weathered many storms, fought many battles and rose to the top of the international competitive scene.
This wasn't enough for Jess as she sought to lead and galvanise women's BJJ in Australia by building "Australian Girls In Gi."
This episode shines the light on a deep history of women's competitive jiu-jitsu, what it takes to over come club politics to train with your mates and strengthen a community that the art had neglected. Legends were made, an amazing community was built and this is the inside story you need to hear.
If you practise a sport you'll know that injuries are inevitable from little aches and pains to major injuries requiring surgery. Kieren may be new to Jiu Jitsu/BJJ however he's still incurred the odd injury while the old salt Adam has had multiple surgeries in Brazil when he was training to earn his BJJ black belt at the Alliance HQ in São Paulo. Tune in to find out how to avoid the mistakes that we're all guilty of and much more! For more Beyond Jiu Jitsu content check out our Instagram @beyondjiujitsu_podcast
While we often welcome some time off theres nothing more dreaded than the "forced" time off from injury. How will we recover? How will we get better if we cant train? Should I quit all together? These thoughts are absolutely natural and this week Roye and I dive in headfirst and get very personal about some of our injuries. In typical fashion we also go a little off subject to discuss some funny and serious life issues. Enjoy the show and stay tuned at the end for a special voice message...Love you Mom
