## Overview

**Name:** Claudia Do Val

**Nickname:** Claudinha

## Bio

Claudia Do Val (“Claudinha”) did not set out to be a competitor—she started jiu-jitsu at 21 under Ricardo De La Riva purely to sharpen her ground game for judo, but the submission art quickly consumed her. After years as a hobbyist, she returned to the tournament scene as a brown belt in 2015 and immediately made her mark, winning the World Championship, European Open, and Rio Winter Open (double gold) that same year. De La Riva awarded her black belt on December 17, 2016. A late bloomer in competition, Do Val proved that a focused run at brown belt could eclipse a decade of white and blue belt obscurity.
