A move from football to martial arts in his early teens led Kauan Barboza to the Carlson Gracie Academy under Ari “Galo,” though his competitive career took off after relocating to the United States in 2015 as a purple belt with teammate Alexandre Molinaro. Sponsored by André Vasconcelos (Alemão), who later promoted him to black belt in June 2017, Barboza eventually shifted his affiliation to Checkmat, joining the headquarters in Los Angeles under Leozinho Vieira.
