Starting at age eight under Michel “Buiu” Pereira at Carlson Gracie Miami, Serpa’s early grappling was shaped by that traditional lineage before he gravitated toward the Mahechas’ notoriously tough Sunday open mats, drawn by the elevated skill level in the room. That shift defined his competitive ascent, culminating in world-level success as a brown belt and a rapid promotion that signaled his arrival as a threat in the heavier adult divisions.
