The No-Gi Hype Trap (What Pro Athletes Hide From Hobbyists)

The No-Gi Hype Trap (What Pro Athletes Hide From Hobbyists)

From Bernardo Faria BJJ Fanatics

April 22, 2026

Bernardo Faria addresses the biggest debate in grappling today: Gi vs. No-Gi. With the massive explosion of submission grappling online, many everyday practitioners are wondering what the future holds—and if they are training the "wrong" way.

Discover the truth about the two diverging paths of modern Jiu-Jitsu. Bernardo explains why No-Gi is rapidly taking over the professional "superfight" and spectator scene, but why the Gi remains the absolute foundation and #1 choice for everyday practitioners at academies worldwide.

This is a crucial reality check for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the fast-paced, explosive nature of modern No-Gi. If you are an older grappler, a busy professional, or someone who wants to train safely for decades, Bernardo validates why prioritizing the Gi might be the smartest choice you can make.

Bernardo breaks down the fundamental differences in pacing and strategy between the two styles. Learn why the Gi slows the game down, turns grappling into a more tactical "chess match," and creates a safer, more sustainable environment for hobbyists, while No-Gi increasingly demands higher levels of speed and athleticism.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
