Stop Turtling When Your Guard Gets Passed (ADCC Referee Explains)
From Bernardo Faria BJJ Fanatics
This conversation features Heath "The Ref" Massery, one of the busiest officials in grappling today. Heath works as a referee for ADCC and for the Professional Grappling Federation (PGF), where he helped write the official rulebook alongside Andrew Murilo. He shares the practical rules that decide close ADCC matches, the kind of advice a competitor almost never hears until it is too late.
The first rule is about turning your back. Heath explains that every ADCC match has two separate periods: a no-points period and a points period. If your guard gets passed during the no-points period, turning your back gives away nothing on the scoreboard, so the smart move is to stay flat and work your way back to guard instead of exposing your back for no reason. If it happens during the points period, staying on your back can cost you real points, and the calculation flips completely.
Heath also breaks down exactly what to do in the moment you are forced to turtle. He walks through the count he uses in his own head, tracking the three seconds a referee needs to see before awarding a back-take, and how to use that window to protect yourself and recover position before the clock runs out.
The second rule is about winning the decision. Heath points out that ADCC judges score decisions on a single criteria: who initiated more action. Submission attempts, guard passes, and takedowns all count as initiations. Thinking about that scoreboard early, from the first minute of the match, is what separates the grapplers who win close decisions from the ones who lose them in overtime.

- Insight from Heath "The Ref" Massery, an ADCC and PGF official who has watched thousands of matches
