5x World Champion Diego Pato Teaches His Secret to Pressure Passing Bigger Guys
From Bernardo Faria BJJ Fanatics
Bernardo Faria sits down with Diego "Pato" Batista, the most decorated Light Featherweight in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, to break down the one skill that built his entire career: pressure passing as a smaller athlete. Pato holds the record for the most IBJJF World titles ever won at Light Feather, a mark he took from his own former coach, and in this conversation he explains exactly how a 66kg competitor generates pressure that is normally reserved for much heavier guys.
Pato walks through his core mechanic step by step: disconnecting the opponent's knee from their chest, keeping them flat on the mat instead of letting them turn to the side, and working two entry points from there, bringing the far leg down or driving underneath the armpit, to arrive at his single non-negotiable goal, chest-to-chest control. He also details how he shuts down De La Riva and Spider Guard attempts by staying low and connected in a tucked, guarded posture that Bernardo jokingly compares to a dinosaur, rather than exposing his arms the way most lightweights do when they try to scramble and move fast.
The conversation also gets into how Pato actually trains. He explains why he is not a heavy driller and prefers to test new ideas live instead, and why he has rolled almost exclusively with much heavier training partners since he started in Manaus, a habit he credits for building the base strength that lets him hold his own against bigger competitors in his own weight class. He closes with the mindset behind his gas tank: using body weight as a tool for pressure instead of relying on strength or speed, so opponents tire out while he stays fresh.
This is a rare direct look at how the most decorated lightweight in the sport thinks about a problem every smaller grappler faces, explained in his own words.
