Jared Welman is a black belt and one of the instructors at the Bernardo Faria Academy in Bedford, Massachusetts. He is 49 years old, he teaches the fundamentals classes at the school, and he drives an hour and a half each way to be on the mat every day. In this one he shows his favorite attack from closed guard, the cross collar choke, and the two ways he chains it together.

He starts with the traditional version. Open the collar a little, get the first hand deep behind the neck instead of stopping at the front, then bring the elbow down to your pocket so his posture comes with it. From there, change the angle, turn to the side, and come palm up underneath the far lapel.

The detail everyone gets stuck on is the second hand. When the lapel is already tight, there is no room to slide it in. Jared gives the collar a small shake first, which loosens it just enough to get deep, and then pulls back to center to finish.

The second half is what he does when the opponent already knows it is coming and fights with two hands on one. Instead of forcing the same grip, he pulls him sideways and then forward using both hands and his legs, lets go, goes over the head with elbow to the neck, and finishes from there. Bernardo points out at the end that these are the two classic cross collar chokes, palm up and palm down, and that Jared put them together as a one two punch: go for the first one, and when they defend it, the second one is already there.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
