Bernardo Faria just got back on the mat after almost two weeks without training jiu-jitsu. Three trips in a row kept him away: a week of vacation with his family in Yellowstone, two or three days at the World Masters in Las Vegas, a couple of days home in Massachusetts catching up on work and family, and then straight to Poland for ADCC. He kept his body moving with push-ups, stretching and even some running, but no jiu-jitsu.

On his first day back, at one of his schools in Massachusetts, he wanted to do every round and go as hard as he could. He held himself back instead. He is 39 now, turning 40 in January, and his body is not the same as when he was a professional athlete. Even back then he was always very careful in the first days after time off, like after hurting his ribs, breaking his foot two days before ADCC, his elbow surgery and his knee surgery.

The reason is simple. When you miss jiu-jitsu, your mind wants every round, but your body is not used to that many rounds anymore. It is very common for people to take weeks off, come back, and get injured on the very first day.

His advice: do not go hard on the first day, and maybe not even in the first week. The longer you were off, the longer you should take to come back. Two years off might mean a month to catch up. Three months off might mean a week and a half or two weeks. Your age and how hard you train matter too. After his two weeks off, he did only three of the five rounds on the first day, planned four or five for the next day, and expected to be back to normal in two or three days. He woke up the next morning feeling good and ready to train again.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
