Almost every older grappler Bernardo Faria talks to says the same thing at some point: "I wish I had started jiu-jitsu earlier." In this video he explains why that regret might be pointing the wrong way, and why there is no perfect age to start.

Bernardo started at 14 and felt old. He knew kids who were green belts and ten time Brazilian national champions by 14 because they started at 5, and blue belt world champions by 15. Most of those kids quit. They competed so much as children that they burned out. Bernardo had less experience than them, so he competed a lot to catch up, but at 16 and 17 he was in his prime and hungry while they were mentally tired.

The same logic applies to adults. If you start in your 40s or 50s, you will not become an adult world champion, and you have to learn the techniques later in life. That is the disadvantage. But you also have the advantages he no longer has at 39: high motivation to learn something new, a body that is not beat up, no surgeries on both knees, no small injuries stacked up over 25 years. Every age has pros and cons. The job is to capitalize on the pros and manage, or simply accept, the cons.

The hardest step in jiu-jitsu is the first one, stepping on the mat. If you start and stay consistent, you will get your black belt one day and you will compete well one day. And maybe, if you had started at 15, you would have been burned out and done with jiu-jitsu by 30. Regret takes you nowhere. Take advantage of your motivation, your body and your will to get better.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
