You signed up for a tournament and nobody else is in your division. Bernardo Faria gets this question from his students all the time, so here is what he tells them.

At small tournaments, especially in the masters divisions, it happens a lot. You have three options that make sense. Go up one weight class: a heavyweight can do super heavy, a lightweight can do middle, and the difference is real but not huge. Go down one age division: if you are masters 4, do masters 3. Or do only the open class, as long as you are not too light. If you are a rooster, light feather or feather, Bernardo would rather see you fight someone a little younger at your weight than a 250 pound guy your age. From middleweight up, the open class is fine, and two or three matches in a small tournament is enough.

The one thing he would not do is go to the adult division. If you train two, three or four times a week as a hobby, there is a big chance you will face a 19 year old who trains three times a day, does not work, assists at his school and dreams of being a black belt world champion. That is not a fair fight, and the chance of getting injured is high. The only exception he can see is a brown belt around 31 who trains twice a day and teaches jiu-jitsu for a living.

One more tip: people sign up at the last minute. If your bracket looks empty a month out, check again one or two weeks before the event. Very often one, two, three or four names show up. Do not skip the tournament. There is still a chance to compete against someone your level, your age and your weight.

Competing in the masters divisions? Bernardo Faria's Jiu-Jitsu For Old Guys series, plus the shorter and more affordable Fast Track BJJ volumes on pressure passing and half guard, are available exclusively at BJJFanatics.com.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
