Why Saying "I Don't Know" Makes You A Better Coach

Sometimes Bernardo Faria simply tells his students "I don't know", and he thinks that makes him a better coach.

The other day a student asked him about a detail in the leg drag. The leg drag is not his game, he is a pressure passing and over-under guy, and he did not know. So he said: "Man, I don't know, but give me two or three days. I'm going to watch someone who is really good at it and get back to you." The student was totally fine.

Many instructors struggle with this because they feel they have to know everything. It is impossible. There are too many techniques and too many details inside each one, and students usually already know the move. They want the detail, or what to do when the opponent counters.

Nobody has to be the god of jiu-jitsu. Ask Bernardo a deep question about the berimbolo and he might not know, because he does not invert much. But a long time on the mat gives you concepts that still help, and makes it easy to find the best person at that move and bring back at least a ballpark answer.

Being honest also sets the right expectations. Your instructor does not know everything, even if he is the best instructor in the world. Keep the school open-minded, encourage students to study and bring new moves to the mat, and leave the ego at the door. A school with more than one instructor helps too: if one does not know, another one might.
