Nowadays, Bernardo Faria thinks it is almost impossible to be a good jiu-jitsu instructor without studying jiu-jitsu. Here is why.

This week he taught the knee cut at his school. It is not his game at all: his game is pressure passing and half guard. So before class he studied Lucas Lepri's instructional, probably the best knee cut in the world, and came to the mat with great details on grips and tricks. Without it, the class would have been a pretty basic knee cut, which is his own knee cut.

When he teaches his A game, he does not need to study. He knows every detail, counter and grip. But for anything outside of what he uses in sparring every day, he sees no other option.

25 years ago there was no BJJ Fanatics, no YouTube and no FloGrappling. You bought VHS tapes of tournaments and studied by debating with your coach and training partners on the mat. Today you can learn a whole system from the best person at each move, and that makes teaching easier too.

So his approach is simple. Before teaching a body lock pass, a knee cut or a heel hook, he asks who does it best in the world, watches how they do it, and brings those details to his students. Teaching only what comes to mind would be unfair to them. Learn from the best, pass it on in class, and keep doing that loop.
