Bernardo Faria is 39, about to turn 40, and he trains two or three times a week. The biggest change he feels in his jiu-jitsu is simple: he cannot afford to fail anymore.

When he was a professional athlete he trained twice a day. His timing was great and his conditioning was great, so his technique did not need to be perfect. He could pull half guard badly, almost get passed, recover, pull half guard again and keep pushing until the sweep worked. Then he would go to the over-under and pass with a lot of pressure and energy.

Today, if a move fails, he does not have the energy to recover. Timing also depends on how often you train: once a week gives you one kind of timing, twice a day gives you a much better one. Training two or three times a week, he cannot trust his timing, so he has to do every move better.

If you are getting older or cannot train every day, this is why refining your technique matters so much. If you are young and train a lot, timing and conditioning give you more chances to fail. And there is always a trade-off: setting up the perfect technique can cost you the timing of the move.

What changed in your jiu-jitsu? Bernardo wants to hear it in the comments.

Bernardo's Jiu-Jitsu For Old Guys series covers pretty much every subject for grapplers over 30, 40 and 50, and the Fast Track BJJ volumes are shorter and more affordable if you don't have time for a full instructional. All available exclusively at BJJFanatics.com.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
