Twenty or thirty years ago, many jiu-jitsu techniques did not have enough names, and that made them hard to learn. Bernardo believes that when you name something, your brain can memorize it, digest it and build a map of the game in your head. Today it is the opposite: many techniques have too many names, especially the leg attacks.

He explains how it happens. Someone nicknames a move and teaches it to his students, and the name sticks. Then he makes a YouTube video or an instructional, or becomes known for that move, and the nickname becomes the real name. The old name disappears, and it turns into a loop that never ends. Eddie Bravo was one of the first to really name techniques and he did a great job: the rubber guard had no name before he called it that, and he named other moves like the twister. Bernardo thinks naming moves makes life easier.

The problem now is that sometimes a small variation, or just one detail inside a move, gets a new name, and sometimes the exact same move gets a different name because someone nicknamed it. When Bernardo watches two instructionals from different instructors on the same subject, he often has to stop and figure out if it is the same move or a different one. And sometimes one detail really does make it a different move.

There is no easy fix, but knowing this helps you learn. A move that looks new might be one you already know under another name, or it might really be something different. Have you ever learned the same technique under two different names? Tell Bernardo in the comments.

In the video Bernardo mentions his Jiu-Jitsu For Old Guys series, made for anyone in the masters division or over 30, 40 or 50. The Fast Track BJJ volumes of the series are shorter and more affordable if you don't have time for a full instructional. All available exclusively at BJJFanatics.com.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
