This video is a preview of Rafael Lovato Jr's new Gi Mount Masterclass, which just came out on BJJ Fanatics. Rafael, the 2007 IBJJF World Champion at black belt and undefeated Bellator Middleweight World Champion, calls the mount his best position, and here he shows Bernardo how he keeps you flat once he gets there. The full course covers the mount basics and how to stay on top, plus the Ezekiel choke, the arm triangle, the arm triangle Ezekiel, the armbar, the X-choke and his finishing touches.

Rafael's point is simple: most people get to the mount and only try to hold it. He keeps you under constant threat instead. If your hands have to defend your neck, they can't build frames to escape, and every time your arms defend, he climbs higher. He picks his grip by the side you want to escape to. As soon as your eyes look one way, the hand that goes in your collar is the one whose elbow drops and blocks that side. If you go the other way, his arm goes around your head, deep to the shoulder, and he drops his head. The Ezekiel is already there, and when you lift an arm to block it, he gets an underhook and moves up. Every time you turn, he switches sides and keeps both of your shoulders on the mat.
Bernardo asks about the bridge. Rafael's answer: his head always goes on the opposite side of the arm he is using, and his weight shifts that way, so you have nothing to bridge into. When he holds the head, he grabs the shoulder and the lat and keeps his head down on the other side. From the mount he can attack with both arms, and he goes for the neck first: Ezekiel, arm triangle or cross choke, with the armbar second. If you turn, he does not rush to take the back. He takes your wrist, pushes it down and opens his elbow on your shoulder, which he calls putting you under arrest, keeps his choking hand ready and stays on top.
