Megaton Dias holds the IBJJF record for World Master titles with 21, and he is the father of UFC champion Mackenzie Dern. He sits down with Bernardo Faria to explain how he plays guard, and why he never needed a hundred moves to win.
Megaton comes from judo and can take almost anyone down, so when does he pull guard? When the other guy's passing looks weak, or his guard looks too hard to pass. In a five minute match there is no time to wait: if the takedown is not coming in the first minute, he changes the plan. His rule for his students is simple. Never let somebody score from the middle of the match to the end, because in five minutes it is very hard to recover. Whoever scores first usually wins.
On the ground he pulls, closes the guard to set his grips, then opens to spider guard or de la Riva. Against bigger opponents he prefers the spider. And he goes for sweeps before submissions, because people fight harder not to get tapped, and very often the sweep attempt hands him the submission anyway.
He also talks about how he trains twice a day and competes almost every weekend, and about his ABC game: one takedown, one pass, one choke, one armbar. Knowing a lot of positions is fine, but what wins is having a few moves you trust and understanding how to play the rules.
Megaton's new instructionals, one on guard and one on takedowns and guard passing, are coming to BJJFanatics.com.
