Placido Santos shows Bernardo how he uses the arm drag from guard as a way into cross ashi, the leg entanglement, and not only to take the back. Placido is an IBJJF No-Gi World Champion at brown belt and a longtime student of John Danaher. His training partner Angel helps him demonstrate.

First the setup. Two mistakes ruin this technique: your feet are level with each other, and your head is out of position. Put your head against your partner's head and keep your shoulders in front of your hips, so he can't pressure forward and flatten you out. Then use a bladed stance, one foot back, because it lets you hit sumi gaeshi and arm drags to cross ashi. When your partner posts on your shoulder, take your shoulder back and away, drop your wrist and snap the arm drag into place while your head stays forward.

Now the off balance. With a top leg and a bottom leg, you threaten sumi gaeshi toward the arm you control, where he has no base, so he bases out. The moment he does, let go of the arm drag because it served its purpose: it extended his body. Frame with one hand, grip the leg with the other, put your foot and then your knee behind his hamstring, capture the leg and put him down. Placido shows it twice, then Bernardo asks about the entry, the hand below the shoulder, and what happens if your partner refuses to base: he gets swept. They also talk about cross ashi as a fallback, like a knee lever.

At the end Bernardo says Placido is one of the best instructors at BJJ Fanatics nowadays.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
