DARUMA DOJO - ASK A BLACK BELT UNDER 90 SECONDS - What should white belts focus on during live rolls

What should a white belt focus on during live rolls?

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is trying to remember every technique they've learned. Instead of improving, they end up overwhelmed.

A better approach is to train with intention.

Choose one objective for each round. Maybe it's maintaining strong defensive frames. Maybe it's protecting your guard. Maybe it's recognizing a position you learned in class and working toward it.

Progress in Jiu-Jitsu doesn't come from trying to do everything at once. It comes from mastering one concept at a time, then building on it over months and years.

The best white belts aren't the ones who win the most rounds. They're the ones who learn something every time they step on the mat.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
