Basic Scissor Sweep and What To Do If Your Opponent Sits Heavy #scissorsweep #jiujitsu #friscotx

From Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu

September 7, 2026

In this video, Professor Matthew Jones shows the basic scissor sweep from closed guard, then demonstrates the adjustment that can make the difference against an opponent with a heavier base. Control the lapel and arm, get your shin across, and don’t rely on your legs alone. If your opponent stays heavy, sit up and use your body weight to pull them forward, break their balance, and make them light enough to sweep. From there, scissor the legs and come right up into mount.

Save this technique for your next BJJ training session.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
