From Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu

September 26, 2026

Have you been thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu, but something keeps stopping you from taking that first step? Maybe you’re nervous about what your first class will be like, worried about getting hurt, or afraid you won’t know what you’re doing.

Professor Matthew Jones explains why those fears shouldn’t define what you expect from your first Jiu-Jitsu class.

At Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu, beginners start with simple techniques and learn progressively. You’re not expected to know what you’re doing—that’s why you’re there. And when it comes time to spar, experienced higher belts can actually be some of the safest people to train with because they’ve developed control.

You don’t have to be good at Jiu-Jitsu to start. You start so you can learn.

It's a mess, I know.

My goal is to build the most comprehensive BJJ encyclopedia anywhere — but good, accurate data is genuinely hard to come by. Records, gyms, belts and nationalities are pieced together from public and community sources, so some of it is incomplete, outdated, or flat-out wrong.

That's where you come in. If you spot something off, tell me and I'll fix it — every correction makes this better for everyone. This website wouldn't be possible without the community.
